Nitrate Dopes

These are the traditional British specification nitrate dopes. They are more flammable than butyrate dopes but they do “stick” far better than butyrate dopes, in fact most cellulose based cements are nitrate based. The normal practice is to start with nitrate and then switch to butyrate for build up coats and colour.

CL12 is the famous British “Red” dope which has red oxide added to it to stop any fungal problems, red dope is still the norm for use with Irish linen and cotton fabrics and is typically used as a first coat.  CL11 is an aluminium dope that primarily provides UV protection for the fabric and is usually applied as a second coat.  CL15 is a versatile product that can be used to build up areas and also as a glossy top coat.
